Embroidered burlap placemats are an easy and affordable way to add natural textures and tones to any table, and the embroidery floss border lets you create a customizable pop of color.
Iron the burlap to remove wrinkles. Then measure and cut the burlap to size. Our placemats measure 12" x 19". When you are cutting the burlap, be careful to follow the grain. Burlap is easy to cut in straight lines by staying in the row throughout the cut.
After the burlap is cut, the material will begin to fall apart. The best way to keep the threads safe is to bend them quickly. We used bright red thread and gave it one pass through the sewing machine.
We tapered in about a quarter of an inch from the edge, so the edges would be a bit worn, but still secure.
Thread the needle with the embroidery floss and start sewing. Use a super simple pattern above and below, alternating the spacing with each color.
Sewing takes a bit of time, but once you've finished your first thread, a template of sorts is created for the next thread. You can use that baseline to quickly match your other colors while watching a movie.
These embroidered burlap tablecloths will perfectly accent any tablescape. We made these creations for a Mexican Christmas party..
