Materials and tools:
White Long Sleeve Button Down Shirt (A Couple Sizes Too Big)
ballpoint
scissors
set of (6) 5/8" grommets or washers
grommet setter
hammer
leather ropes
black sweat pants
three dimensional glow in the dark painting
store bought vest
(2) scarves
Hand sewing needle and thread (optional)
Pirate themed buttons (optional)
Steps:
- On the top of the shirt, just inside the button cover for the top three buttons, mark the location of three sets of grommets or grommets (three running vertically on the left side of the button cover and three directly opposite the ones on the right side of the button of buttons).
- Cut a very small hole where the marks were made. Insert the male end (larger shaft) of a grommet through the front of the sleeve. Click on the female part of the buttonhole where the male part extends into the back of the shirt. Insert a grommet setter into the back of the grommet and tap with a hammer on a hard surface. The teeth of the male portion must hold the female portion. Continue through all six eyelets.
- Carefully cut the button cover just outside the seam lines so the seam remains intact. Cut from the collar to the second button, through the placket and to the collar. The edge of the collar can also be cut just outside the seam line to create a frayed look.
- Leather lacing through the grommets to create the pirate's open throat shirt. Cut the bottom of the shirt to the appropriate length for your pirate.
To make the sleeves, cut off the cuffs and sew them back to the sleeve a few inches above the bottom of the sleeve to form a channel. Thread leather through the channel and tie around the pirate's wrist.
- Change the buttons on the vest for pirate-themed buttons.
- To make the capri pants:cut the sweatpants to be about 6" shorter. Cut a frayed edge on each leg. Apply strips of glow-in-the-dark dimensional paint for added effect and for added safety ..
For a seamless project
Instead of sewing the cuffs back to the sleeves, simply cut the sleeves to a suitable length and fray the edges, and skip changing the vest buttons.
