Whether she needs fake blood to play a prank on a friend or as a really creepy adornment for her Halloween costume, she skips the expensive, pre-made stuff. You can make fake, edible blood with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

What you will need

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 oz (or more) red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons of chocolate syrup
  • 4 ounces of water
  • blender

Do it

First, dissolve the powdered sugar in the water to help remove any chunks. Add the sugar to the water in small increments, beating with a fork until smooth. Next, put the sugar water and the rest of the ingredients in a blender. Mix until combined.

Troubleshooting

If the blood seems too runny, add more power sugar. Doing so can make it look more pink, so you'll need to add a little more red food coloring and/or choloclate syrup. Alternatively, if it seems too orange, try adding some blue food coloring to the mix. If you want your fake blood to be more viscous, you can use corn syrup instead of the activated sugar, but use about half the amount of water.

Apply

Use a brush or small eyedropper to create authentic looking "blood" droplets.

To remove stains

Concentrated food coloring can stain. If you do stain your skin, rinse or wipe off as much of the food coloring as you can, then soak a clean cloth in white vinegar and gently rub the cloth over the stained areas of skin. If your clothing is stained, scrape as much of the spot as you can, then press a damp white cloth firmly against the stain to transfer the dye from the clothing to the cloth. Rinse the cloth, using a new section, continue wiping off the stain. Soak the stained area in a shallow bowl filled with 1 cup cold water, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap. After 15 minutes, rinse it under a cold tap with the stained side down. If the stain dries, combine 1 quart of warm water, 1 tablespoon of household ammonia, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent in a bowl. Soak the stained area in this solution for 15 minutes, and then gently rub it from the back to loosen the stain. Rinse very well under warm water with the stained side down. Wash immediately.
