Hanging your holiday centerpiece is an unexpected twist on classic decor that your family and guests will love. It won't get in the way when you're talking to other partygoers across the table, and it leaves more room for all the tasty food and treats.
Spread out the moss and start attaching to the Styrofoam wreath with floral pins. Cut large pieces of moss from the roll, wrap around the wreath, and pin every four to five inches (or where the moss doesn't lie flat on the Styrofoam).
Designate which side will be the bottom and which will be the top. Keep most pins at the top when possible. (The top is the side closest to the ceiling, so it won't show when hanging.)
Grab your Styrofoam cones and combine them as sizes:small cones together and larger cones together. Next, take two cones of the same size and put them together to form a 3-D diamond shape. They are attached to each other using floral pins. You will have three full diamond shapes, one larger and two smaller.
Roll each of your three diamond shapes in moss and secure with floral pins. Cut off the excess and clip the ends of moss. Repeat this process until all three cones are completely covered in moss.
Secure an additional floral pin to the top of each cone and cut a long piece of monofilament (approximately 1 to 2 feet long) to attach to each pin. You can cut the monofilament to different lengths later.
Cut three pieces of monofilament, approximately 18 to 20 inches long, for the three glass ornaments to be included in your centerpiece. Thread through each ornament and triple knot to secure clear thread. Cut off the excess knot and leave the remaining rope intact for hanging later.
Now it's time to make the big atomic star shape. Start by cutting your strips of floral wire into varying lengths (most pieces were cut at 8 inches and 5 inches for this part of the project). Fold the longest pieces in the center and poke through the moss-covered Styrofoam rock with both ends, securing with craft glue.
To create pointed pieces with the circular pods on the end, insert two pieces through the Styrofoam rock, about an inch apart from each other. Push the protruding ends together to form a triangle shape. Add glue to the ends and push the joined ends through a dry ball.
Use a combination of these steps to complete the atomic star. Wait for it to dry completely before tying a long (2 to 3 foot) piece of monofilament to one of the round star points that does not have a dry sheath on the end.
Now it's time to assemble all the finished pieces. Decide how high or low you want the crown portion of your centerpiece to hang. Then double that number to determine how long each piece of monofilament should be to hold the crown in place. Cut four pieces of monofilament to the length you determined. Example:If you want the wreath to hang three feet from the ceiling, cut four pieces of monofilament that are six feet each.
Wrap the string around the crown at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock, keeping each string evenly spaced from the next. Pull all four pieces up above the wreath, tie a knot between the strings three or four times, and hang from the ceiling hook.
Start pinning floral pins halfway down the bottom of the now hanging wreath. This is how you will join the ornaments, the atomic star and the 3-D diamond shapes. Thread the monofilament of each shape through the pins and triple knot around the hook once you have reached the desired length. You'll want to vary the lengths so that each shape hangs at a different height. Cut off the excess and push the floral pins all the way in, so they are flush with the surface of the wreath. Cover any exposed flower pins with small patches of moss and some glue.
