We collect a bunch of mismatched plates from thrift stores and garage sales, paint them a variety of same-tone colors, and then hang them together to create an attractive wall display.
To fill the wall space with a properly proportioned pattern, measure the height and width with a tape measure. Based on the dimensions of the wall space, place the plates on an unfolded roll of craft paper, moving them randomly until the proper shape is formed.
Reattach the numbered painter's tape to the back of each plate. You will refer to this number when it is time to place each of the plates on the wall.
Trace all the plates in place with a marker, assigning the corresponding numbers and colors written on the craft paper and on small strips of painter's tape.

Protect the surface of your work area with a drop cloth. Lay the plates on a flat, raised, level surface, then spray them in groups by color. For an even finish, hold the spray at least 8" from the surface of the plates, then move back and forth in a slow, controlled manner.
Use scissors to cut out the outlines of the traced plates from the template, and then stick the template on the wall.
Hold the plate in its correct position, then use a tape measure to determine the distance from the top of the plate to the plate hanger nail. Mark this placement with the pencil.
Use a hammer to fix the plate hanger nail.

Once all the plate hanger nails are in place, add plate hanger to all the plates, then drive them into place. Undo the corners of the template and take it down from the wall.
