This is the perfect way to get the color right in your holiday décor. Combine small strips of tape in a simple sewing stitch pattern to get the look you want. We use bright colors and patterns for a chic bohemian vibe, but any color palette can be achieved.
This finished stocking measures 21”h x 16”w. For a smaller stocking, simply scale the pattern when printing to your desired size (70%, 80%, 90%, etc.). Download and print the storage pattern.
Cut out your fabric using the downloadable patterns. Cut two mirror images for the outer fabric of the stocking and two mirror images for the lining of the stocking.
Lay one piece of outside stocking (the side you want to be the front), right side up on a sheet of paper or foil. Gather the different ribbons, glue and scissors.
Cut a piece of ribbon the width of your stocking.
Apply a line of glue on the wrong side of the tape.
Place the ribbon inside out on top of the stocking, smoothing out any wrinkles.
Repeat the process steps, gluing the strips of tape to the top of your stocking in the desired pattern. Don't worry about the ends of the tape lining up, they may extend a bit on the fabric of the stocking. Wait a few hours for the glue to dry.
When you're done, you should have this.
Lay the right side back together with the front of the tape, matching all side edges. Pin together around the sides and sew, leaving the top open. Trim excess tape from side seams.
Turn the middle right.
Lay the lining pieces to the right and gather them around the side edges. Leave a 5” opening along one edge for turning and leave the top unstitched.
Cut a piece of non-elastic ribbon for the stocking loop to the specified length. Use the pattern as a guide. Place the raw edges of the tape together to create a loop.
Pin the raw edges of the loop to the outside back seam. Brush to ensure.
With the liner inside out and the outside of the stocking right side out, slide the outside to the inside of the liner. They should be on the right side together. Match up the side seams and pin around the top edge. Sew the two pieces together.
Pull the stocking on the right side out through the opening in the lining. Place the opening in the closed position and press the liner into the stocking. Border stitch around the top of the stocking if desired.
To give the stocking a bit of bohemian flair, add a rick rack and trim tassel. Try ribbons, feathers, or even a boa for more personality. Bundle and tie at the top with a piece of ribbon. Tie the rick-rack tassel to the loop on the stocking.
