What do you get when you cross a piñata with a Christmas tree? A fringed paper cone tree. This sweet little number is an easy way to add a whimsical element to your holiday décor for just a few bucks.
The easiest way to draw a semicircle on construction paper is to use a compass. To make your own, start by tying a piece of string to the end of a thumbtack.
Fold the card stock in half on the long side.
Press the tack down at the center point. Then find the length from the center point to the edge. This is the length you want your rope to be. Tie the string around the pencil. Pull the string hard, and then use the string to move the pencil in a perfect semicircle.
Cut the semicircle.
Using the center point you found earlier as the top, roll the other end to meet you and form the cone.
Staple at the bottom or tape along the seam.
Now you have a perfect cone for your fringe..
To make the fringe, cut squares of tissue paper, then use scissors to cut 3/4 of the way up. If you have fringe scissors (sold at craft stores) this goes MUCH faster.
Add a line of masking tape or use a glue stick to attach the strip of fabric to the tree. Instead of using long strips, cut the paper into squares to make sure the strip doesn't get messy as it goes around the circumference of the cone. If you have crepe party streamers on hand, these work just as well as tissue paper, just cut them into smaller pieces.
Glue fringe all the way around the cone. Allow an inch or so between coats. Repeat until the entire cone is covered with overlapping layers of fringe. Tip:Cut your pieces into smaller diameters as you go up the cone. If you start with 2" x 2" squares, by the time you get to the top, it's easiest to work with a 1/2" wide piece.
