Collect a bunch of lanterns that vary in height, shape, style, and finish. For best results, stick with odd numbers. Based on a 6' tall ladder, the 7, 9, 12 and 15 sets work best for proper spacing.
It is important that the lanterns hang at different heights to achieve a randomly spaced effect. But, no lantern should hang less than 36" above the table top. When determining the proper lengths for each rope, double each of those lengths to account for the double knot in the rope. Mark the rope in the appropriate measures..
Use the utility knife to cut the rope to size.
Create a double knot by making a loop from a cut rope on itself. Thread the string through the handle of each lantern, then pull both ends of the string through the loop.
Use a drill and 1-1/2" trowel bit to make holes in the sides of the ladder. These holes will be used to suspend the ladder from a ceiling, gazebo, or pergola.
Based on the desired height, cut the sisal rope to size. Thread the rope through the holes, and then suspend the ladder. If you are going to attach the ladder to the ceiling, insert the heavy-duty hook eyes into the joists. For installations where the ladder will be suspended from a gazebo or pergola, the rope can simply be tied around boards. If you're permanently suspending lanterns from an arbor or pergola, use a drill and 1-1/2" bit to add holes directly through joist boards. Then secure the ladder with rope and wire.
Cut the bilge wire into 8” long pieces. Hold each lantern in the desired location and tie its string to the rungs of the ladder. Then secure the lanterns in place with bilge wire.
Once all the lanterns are securely hung, add candles and light them.
