Dip-dying is an easy and inexpensive way to add custom colors to your décor. Create a bunch of socks in a color palette or use a different color for each member of the family.
For this color block ship, you will need the downloadable stock pattern; a pack of Rit Dye; 1/2 yard of outer cotton fabric; 1/2 yard of cotton fabric lining; 1 yard of interlocking or cotton batting (optional for a sturdier sock); and sewing basics (pins, scissors, thread, and a sewing machine).
Print the pattern pieces. Cut two outer stocking pattern pieces, two lining stocking pieces, two optional padding or cotton pieces, and one stocking loop piece.
If using interfacing, follow cotton or interfacing instructions and adhere to wrong side of each siding pattern piece.
Place the lining pieces to the right and gather around the outer edge, leaving the bottom of the foot open. Sew around Don't sew the top closed, just sew around the side edges.
Fold the stocking loop in half, right sides together. Pin and sew the outer edge. Use a safety pin or fabric spinner to turn the loop clockwise so that the seam is on the inside of the tube. press.
Fold the tube in half so the raw ends meet to create a loop. Lay the raw edges along the top back of one of the exterior storage pieces. Put it in place and glue them along the top edge.
Lay the outer stocking pieces on the right side, tuck them around the outer edges, and then sew the pieces together. Don't sew the top edge, just around the sides.
Turn the stocking right side out, using your hand to gently press all the curves and inside edges. press.
Slide the liner sock around the outer sock so they are snug together. Match up the side seams and bring the top edges together. Sew Around Turn the stocking right side out and snap the opening at the foot of the lining closed. Press the inner lining of the stocking and press.
Follow the preparation instructions on the fabric dye package. Gently dip one edge of your stocking into the dye and let it sit for the allotted time. Pull out and rinse until water runs clear. Wash and hang to dry.
And there you have it. Lock in colors, give them a good '70s tie dye, or even stripe down your stocking by folding it in half or thirds when dipping. Either way, your family will love it.
