Paint the papier-mâché box a solid color. You can also paint the interior. Let it dry completely.

The fun part is decorating the cake. Create the look of melted ice cream by spraying thinner manual paint along the sides and top of the painted box. Let the paint drip organically. Gather supplies to decorate the trinket box.

Once the melting ice cream is dry, place the faux ice cream on top. Use a pom-pom (feel free to make your own or use a store-bought one) and glue it to the top with glue. Add a glued ice cream cone to the top of the pom pom. Although somewhat delicate, the sugar cones are surprisingly robust.

Using hot glue, attach small toys, key chains, and other fake candy to the top of the cake box.

A small strip of sprinkles can also be added to the bottom of the box using craft glue. Apply with a sponge brush and add the drops while the glue is still wet.
