This simple outdoor chalkboard fence is a quick DIY project that kids will enjoy for a long time. Toddlers to tweens love to draw with chalk (adults too). When the board is really big and it's hanging on a fence, what creative minds can create is truly endless.

Determine and mark the placement of the plywood. Pre-drill the screw holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Use galvanized screws to fasten the plywood to the fence. Be sure to screw into fence posts or rails, not just pickets.

Use a level to make sure the wood is straight.

Pour the chalkboard paint into a paint tray. Various colors are now available beyond the traditional black.

Use a roller brush to apply the paint to the plywood. Apply two even coats allowing adequate flash time between coats.

Attach baskets and/or containers to the side of the blackboard to hold chalk and other toys. When hanging chalk cups consider the height of children; younger kids would need chalk hung lower, older kids can reach higher.
Make sure there are drainage holes in the baskets so water doesn't pool and create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Speaking of mosquitoes, adding a citronella plant will help deter bugs and also add a decorative effect to your outdoor activity center.

Fill the containers with chalk, bubbles, sunscreen and more. Remember that the water will eventually melt the chalk, so you might consider building a small cover or bringing the chalk inside when it rains.

A quick rinse with the hose or a good rain will clean the board and prepare artists for a whole new project.
