Make a garter for your big day and let it add to the tradition and fun of your wedding reception.
Use a tape measure to determine the circumference of your thigh. Place it exactly where you want the garter to rest.
Cut a piece of lace three inches shorter than your thigh measurement. You want it to be comfortable so it doesn't slip during the ceremony.
Fold the cord in half (right sides together) and attach the short edge. Sew.
Open the seam and then pin down the edges of the side seam. Sew around the shape of a rectangle to secure the seam.
Use a needle and thread to hand sew on the embellishments.
We use fancy rhinestone button and black lace flower; Both were purchased at a craft store. The button was sewn to the flower.
Sew the back of the flower directly to the right side of your lace garter, opposite the seam side. You can do this with any embellishment you choose, just carefully sew directly to the right side of your garter. Don't sew all around. Just sew on one side, because you need the garter to stretch.
And you're done. Just don't throw it away during the reception if you want to keep it as a keepsake!
