This easy-to-build box is perfect for a kitchen window sill or countertop. If you plan to keep your potting box outside, use a weather-resistant wood species and cover the box with plastic wrap.
We didn't finish or paint our box, but instead left it natural and added a pop of color by painting the clips a bright neon color.
5 pieces of wood (we used maple):2 measuring 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" (end pieces); 2 measure 20" x 5-1/2" (sides); and 1 measuring 18-1/2" x 5-1/2" (bottom)
wood glue
finishing the nails
metal clips
hammer
two clamps
neon spray paint
Extra finishing nails for reinforcement.
waterproofing tape, such as Tyvek
Lay the bottom piece of wood (the 18-1/2" x 5-1/2" piece) on a work surface and apply a small bead of wood glue around the edges. Adhere one of the side pieces (20" x 5-1/2") to the bottom, aligning on center. This will leave a 3/4" overhang at each end.
Place a small strip of wood glue on the side of one of the end pieces (5-1/2" x 5-1/2") and adhere to the bottom and side, creating a corner. Repeat this step on the other end of the planter. Place a small bead of wood glue on both the end side pieces and end pieces and gently press to complete the box.
While the glue is still a little wet, change your box as needed to make sure the pieces match up the way you want them. Once the pieces are in place, use a clamp at each end to secure the box. Let the box dry for at least 12 hours. When dry, use a few finishing nails in each corner to reinforce the box.
Use a pencil to mark where you will place the clips. For our box, we measured 1" down from the top and placed one in the direct center (10" from the end) and then divided the difference for the other two clips on each side. Once you've marked them how you want, gently hammer in a nail, leaving it sticking out a bit for the clip to slide over.
We painted the clips with neon spray paint suitable for metal. We then used cut-out cardstock to write the names of the herbs in the box.
(Optional) You can line the box with waterproof tape or plastic. This will prevent your box from warping excessively if you are planting items that need regular watering.
