Whether you want a modern or classic wedding, every bride deserves a beautiful wedding veil to walk down the aisle with. And knowing you made it yourself makes it even more special!
The measurements below are based on standard veil lengths sold in stores, and assuming the veil is placed on top of your head. For more specific measurements, use a tape measure and measure from where you want the veil to sit on your head to its final resting point on your body. Then add an inch.
Veil lengths:
shoulder 22"
25" elbow
Waist 30"
Mid hip 33"
hip 36"
Fingertips 45"
Waltz 54"
Ankle 70"
Chapel 90”
Cathedral 108 "
Cut a piece of tulle to the desired length x 3 yards wide. Cut the tulle in a single layer, do not fold it and cut it all at once. If you cut it while it is folded, you can get jagged edges. We are doing a classic one tier veil. If you want a double tier, simply cut two pieces to the desired length, one for each tier.
Sew a line of gathering stitches along the top edge of the veil. (A gathering stitch is essentially a long basting stitch, with the ends not sewn.)
Gather the top of the veil by pulling the bobbin threads on each side.
Gather the top of the veil as much as you can, until it's the same size as your comb.
Use a regular stitch to sew over the gathered top edge, pushing the gathered veil as close as possible as it goes through the machine. You really want to make it a nice tight tight top. This will secure your gathered veil together.
You should now have something like this.
Cut off the excess from the gathered ends to make the tulle a nice clean line.
Flip the comb over so it is wrong side up against the veil. Align the top of the veil with the top of the comb. Use a thread and a needle to secure the gathered end of the veil around the top of the comb.
Make sure to go all the way around the top of the comb with the thread.
Flip the comb backwards. Your veil should now cover the stitches.
Add a pretty silk ribbon to the bottom of the veil. Simply sew the ribbon right side up, directly over the right side of the veil hem. Sew the ribbon directly to the top of the tulle, along the entire bottom edge. You can use Fray Check on the ends of the tape when finished, or fold the tape under 1/4" when sewing.
Now push the comb into your hair to secure and wear with pride!
