In renovation or construction, windows have standard dimensions when they have not been custom-made. What are these famous sizes?
In principle, all carpentry manufacturers use the same dimension standards when manufacturing their windows. This is a rule established by construction professionals to facilitate the renovation or installation of windows or doors. Choosing a standard size for your openings makes it easy to find suitable products on the market and simplifies the choice of their location. In addition, these standards were imposed to provide natural lighting in the house and thus reduce electrical expenses. And to comply with the 2012 thermal regulations, respecting this standardization is also important. This RT 2012 requires, for example, that the bay windows have a total surface area equivalent to 1/6 of the living area.
The said standard dimensions are expressed in centimeters and always according to a width and height ratio.
For a window consisting of a single leaf, the width is 75 cm against 60 cm in height. A window made up of two leaves will have a size of 115, 125 or 135 cm in width for a height of 100 cm. Otherwise, it can have a width of 125 or 135 cm for a height of 120 cm.
Obviously, when it comes to bay windows, the dimensions are more important. For the two-leaf models, you will find different sizes:215 x 180 cm, 215 x 210 cm or 215 x 240 cm.
Similarly, for patio doors, the dimensions vary. The classic models have a height of 250 cm for a width of 60 or 80 cm. If they consist of two leaves, the size goes from 215 cm high to a width of 100 or 120 cm.
The catalog of windows being particularly large, you will find other models with very specific dimensions on the market. In bathrooms or toilets, for example, it is customary to use square windows. Their size is variable. The larger ones are 60 x 60 cm while the smaller ones are 40 x 40 cm.
In small rooms or hallways, preferences are for long windows with a width of 60 cm and a height of 100 cm.
In summary, these standard windows are ideal for saving money. It is also to choose simplicity. They are easy to find and replace. But if you express specific architectural needs for a more original house or because you are facing technical constraints, then opt for tailor-made models. Not only do you have the option of choosing the dimensions, but you are also free to select the type of materials, finishes, colors or styles that you want. In short, everything is personalized according to your preferences.
