Prime the wooden column with a white primer. Let dry. Sand the column. Apply a base coat of the black licorice paint included in the Florentine Checkered Effect Marble Kit. Let the base coat dry.
Moisten the sponge that comes in the kit. Pinch and tear the edges of the sponge to make a ragged edge, which will give a more random sponge pattern. Squeeze the two colors of green paint, light green and dark green, in a twisting motion onto a paper plate, one color on top of the other.
Squeeze some of the white marbling color over the green colors. Squeeze some of the thickener/extender onto the paint. This causes the colors to start mixing. Rotate the plate slightly in your hand to bring the paints together, but don't move them. Dip the sponge into the paint mixture and press down on the column. Use a sponge wedge to get into the smallest cracks. Let the paint dry.
For an authentic marble look, add grain and cracks with white paint. Mix equal amounts of white paint and thickener/thinner, dip a pen (provided in the kit) into the paint mixture and apply random diagonal streaks. It's best to work "nervously", without much pen control, to get a realistic look. Add as much or as little marbling as you like. Remember, real marble varies.
To add a crack, use the pen and white paint mixture to apply a line thinner than a vein in the opposite direction of the vein. When you intersect the vein, move the feather down slightly and continue the crack to replicate the marble changes when cracking in real life. Let the marbling dry.
Apply a coat of gloss acrylic spray finish for a high shine.
