Since paint and hardware are the main elements for this project, it's important to choose a sideboard that can be easily painted and can be drilled for hardware connection. Solid wood dressers with flat drawer fronts work best.
To give an old dresser a more modern and masculine look, you'll need to remove any glue on appliqués or trim. This is easy to do by using a chisel or flathead screwdriver to pry the app out of the drawer front.
New hardware will be attached to the drawer fronts and therefore new holes will need to be drilled. Fill the holes with wood putty, then smooth the surface with a putty knife.
Before new paint can be applied, you will need to rough up and/or remove the existing finish. Use fine grit sandpaper to loosen existing sealant. Once the entire surface is sanded, be sure to wipe down the vanity with a damp cloth.
The key to giving your walk-in closet a nautical feel is painting it with two shades of paint:ultra-white and navy blue. First, cover the entire casing with ultra-white latex paint using the paint sprayer. The ultra-white will serve as a crisp, clean background against the navy blue drawer fronts.
Add visual depth and sharp contrast by painting the drawer fronts with navy blue latex paint using the paint sprayer.
For a touch of nautical texture, thick sisal rope will be used as drawer pulls. Before the sisal can be cut and joined, locate the center point of the drawer front, then determine the exact location of each end of the pull. Use drill and 3/4” bit to add holes.
Unroll sisal rope, then cut 14” strips to use as pulls with a knife. Wrap painter's tape around the ends of the rope, then thread the pulls through the holes and add knots to the inside of the drawer front.
