It's okay to admit it:sometimes it's easier and cheaper to buy furniture at the big box stores. However, if you decide to go that route, there's still no need to settle for ordinary. A simple decoupage project can turn any everyday seat into something truly special.

To get started, you'll need your chair, scissors, knife, sandpaper, paintbrush, painter's tape, and a decoupager's best friend:Modge Podge. You will also need to select what type of paper you want to use to transform your furniture. We used a graphic marble print to add texture and interest to a simple office chair.

You will need to sand the chair with a fine grit sandpaper before applying any Modge Podge. Store-bought furniture can sometimes have uneven and/or slippery varnishes, which will make decoupaging difficult. Clean and smooth it for an optimal decoupage surface.

Apply a healthy, but not sloppy layer of Modge Podge. You don't want this layer to dry before you put paper on top of it, so use your best judgment. If the glue is starting to get sticky, pause and put down some paper, then continue with the process.
It is very important that you place the paper in a straight line so that the pattern you have chosen stands out correctly. Once in place, press firmly and smooth the paper to get rid of any bumps or air pockets.

After waiting at least 10-20 minutes for the Modge Podge to set, use a sharp pair of scissors to remove any extra paper hanging from the edge of the chair. It is often more effective to do this with a series of small cuts, rather than trying to snip the edge of the entire chair.

Lastly, you'll want to apply the Modge Podge top coat. Modge Podge is a combination of glue and varnish, so this layer will secure the paper to the chair and create a shiny finish on your piece. Again, you want to apply the Modge Podge generously and evenly. Let it dry for 24 hours.

The final effect is shiny, new, elegant and personalized. Your chair may have started in a factory, but ended up in a loving home. So sit back, relax and enjoy your unique creation. You've earned it.
