Before the countertop installation begins, ask the installer to take special care of falls. If necessary, cut off the fall of the butcher block to remove saw marks and nicks. Once shaped, smooth the perimeter of the material with an orbital sander, removing only knife marks and high spots, being careful not to reshape the part.

Secure the butcher block to a work surface with padded clamps. Using a 3/8” twist drill bit and working slowly, go around the perimeter of the butcher block on the top and bottom edges.
Next, examine the butcher block to determine its top side. At the bottom, center a 4" to 6" wide mark along each shorter edge. Using the 1/2" drill bit and starting at the center of each mark, calculate to remove the length.
Using a piece of sandpaper, remove burnt or burnished spots.

Using steel wool and smoothing down the grain of the wood, rub the entire board in a circular motion. Using a clean cotton towel, apply the butcher oil liberally and according to the label. Once dry, enjoy!
