All the quince branches suffering from a chancre must be removed and burned . It is important to disinfect pruner blade after pruning and before moving to another tree.
It is a fungus or bacterium that attacks the weak parts of a tree, branches or trunk with an injury by accident or pruning wound.
Bacterial canker affects stone trees (cherry, plum, peach, apricot…and also poplar, chestnut, lemon…) and European canker (mushroom) on pome trees (apple, pear, quince, etc.) but also on plane trees, chestnuts, oaks, pines, walnuts, roses, vines, etc.
Whatever the chancre, the remedy is the same:we cut, we carve, we remove the affected parts and we burn. There is no preventive treatment except a prophylactic method which consists of disinfecting pruning tools with alcohol or white vinegar before pruning the next tree.
Another precaution is not to prune in windy or rainy weather .
Copper sprays (Bordeaux mixture) prevents the spread of fungus spores or bacteria. The application of a healing agent on pruning wounds seems to be a habit, but the effectiveness does not seem to be guaranteed.
The best way to avoid them is on the one hand to have trees that do not suffer:sufficient water, adequate soil, and on the other hand to practice a light size on wood of the year, for rapid natural healing.
