We reimagined an old flea market dresser, turning it into a combination nightstand and pet bed. To do this, we cut out the bottom two drawers, lined the inset with a beadboard, and painted the entire unit a fun color. Finally, we added a cozy cushion, making it a perfect haven for a small dog or cat.
Remove two bottom drawers from dresser.
Use a screwdriver or drill to remove the center clamp. Next, remove the horizontal fascia using a reciprocating saw.
Use a tape measure to determine the proper height, width, and depth of the inside of the vanity.
Cut a piece of plywood to a size 3/4" shorter in length and width than the inside dimensions, then lay it on the bottom. This smaller size will allow adequate wiggle room for installing the plywood brace.
If you don't have a circular saw to cut your plywood, the home improvement store will most likely make it for you for a small charge.
Use a screwdriver to remove existing hardware.
Use sandpaper or sanding block to smooth any rough spots on the vanity surface. Wipe off dust with a damp cloth.
Use a circular saw to cut a 4' x 8' sheet of beadboard to the proper height and width of the interior. Use sandpaper or sanding block to remove any rough spots on the bead board. Hold each strip of beadboard in place, then secure with a nail gun or screws.
Cover the floor surface of your work area with a drop cloth. Shake and stir the primer can, then slowly pour into the HVLP paint container.
Cover all dresser surfaces with an even, controlled, spray coat of primer. Let it dry completely.
Clean and rinse the HVLP paint sprayer. Load it with your finish color, then spray two coats. Allow approximately 2-3 hours for the first coat of paint to dry before applying the second coat.
