Not sure what to do with your fireplace when there's no fire? Make this decorative screen covered in log pieces. We made it with a magnetic backing so it can be easily attached and removed without the need for tools.
Measure the chimney opening. These measurements will determine the size of the plywood. For ease, plywood can be pre-cut to desired dimensions at a big box store. We use 1/4” plywood because it is sturdy enough for the wood slices to stick to, but not too heavy for the magnets to hold it in place. Our fireplace is in a corner, so we need two pieces of plywood so that both sides are covered.
Paint the front and sides of the plywood. The black paint will show between the wood slices and mimic the shadows inside a real woodpile.
Cut the branches into slices using a miter saw. We used birch for the black and white bark, but any type of wood could be used. For a natural look, cut slices between 1/8" and 1" thick. If you don't have a miter saw, it's easy to buy pre-cut wood slices at a craft store in different sizes to skip this step.
Place the wood slices on the painted side of the plywood. Keep the wood slices close together for a more realistic look. When you're happy with the layout of the wood, use wood glue to bond each slice together. Let dry and do not hold this project vertically for at least four hours.
When the glue is dry and the slices are firmly glued to the plywood, turn the entire unit over. Extra strong disc magnets are available online. Buy enough to evenly cover the top of each screen, about 6" apart. Measure ahead and be sure to position the magnets so they line up with the metal fireplace frame, not the glass. Apply epoxy Set Fast Set on the back of each magnet and gently press each one down onto the plywood. Wait overnight for the epoxy to bond to the wood before hanging your fireplace screen.
Align the magnets with the metal of the fireplace and snap them into place. The magnets make it easy to remove the screen when you want to use the fireplace and to reattach the screen when not in use. Plus, this lampshade will add a lovely, woodsy element to any room.
