Developing a pond is one of the best solutions for preserving biodiversity. It also offers a touch of freshness and originality regardless of its size. Do you dream of installing a pond in your garden, but don't know how to go about it? Follow below the basic rules to follow.
An ornamental and peaceful object, the pond fits perfectly into any garden, large or small. However, you must respect certain regulations during its construction, otherwise you will have serious problems. You must start by choosing the right materials for your water point, it depends on the size and the use.
You will have the choice between the compacted clay or concrete basin. Note that the clay one must be 40 cm thick and the ground must be highly impermeable. You must also pay attention to compaction. Concrete, on the other hand, is a very classic material, but which must be worked only by professionals. Indeed, the shape of the basin as well as the final result are quite difficult to achieve by an amateur. The basin risks cracking if the concrete is incorrectly dosed. However, you should know that repairs are quite expensive, because you have to invest in a complete drain.
Otherwise, don't forget to set up a tarp. Be aware that those in PVC or EPDM adapt to all shapes, as they are very elastic and resistant, which makes them a very economical alternative. However, avoid tarpaulins with consistencies lower than 0.8 mm. Be aware that the greater the thickness, the more solid the pool will be. Finally, to avoid sealing problems, distinguish between simple shapes:oval, round, rectangle...
To find the right location, choose a place within sight, such as in front of the terrace or near the power and electricity network. This will allow you to keep an eye on the children playing near the pool, but also to control the play of light at nightfall.
Be aware that your pond will need 5 to 6 hours of sunshine a day. Thus, place it in the southeast avoiding the north and south side. Never install a water point under a tree, because dead leaves fall daily and in abundance in autumn. However, in contact with water, certain plants become toxic and this could destroy the fauna of your pond. Conifer needles, for example, acidify the water while rotting fruit generates highly toxic alcohol. If you want to have a shady area, plant a large tree far enough from the pool.
Then, you should never install your pool in another material such as in a bowl. Otherwise, this container will collect polluted water during the rainy season. Also avoid areas where groundwater overflows or locations where there is groundwater circulation.
Finally, to build a pond in the garden, you will not have to request authorization from the town hall. However, to avoid possible complications with the neighbours, make a declaration of work after having consulted the specifications of the condominiums.
