In May 2016, Portugal ran for 4 days without use no fossil fuels.
He used only solar, wind and hydropower.
Portugal has broken a record in Europe by being completely autonomous thanks to renewable energies alone for 4 whole days.
During these 4 days (from May 7 to 11, 2016) or for more than 100 hours, the country did not need fossil fuels (coal, gas, power stations) to function.
Yet in 2013, Portugal only operated with 13% hydro and 3% solar.
In 2016, 48% of the energy consumed by the country came from renewable sources.
This is the result of an active energy transition policy carried out for several years.
Portugal has invested in a large wind farm to minimize the imports of hydrocarbons on which it was completely dependent a few years ago.
"What seems to us a feat today should become the norm. Because, in the European Union, the consumption of renewable energies is clearly on the rise," recalls James Watson, CEO of SolaPower.
Sweden is a good student with 52.6% of its total consumption dedicated to clean energies.
It is followed by Finland and Latvia with 39%, Austria and Germany (33%) and Denmark (29%).
Germany, meanwhile, has set itself the goal of going all-renewable by 2050.
France is unfortunately still lagging behind. It is committed to using 23% renewable energy by 2020.
Unlike its European neighbours, its renewable energy consumption only reached 14% in 2013 . Could do better!
When will our political leaders have the same energy ambition as in Portugal?!
