Washing machines are available in many sizes and cost just pennies. You can create big, chunky necklaces with giant washers or dainty, dainty necklaces with tiny washers. Charm bracelets can be made using lots of small washers, and walnut earrings are perfect for summer fun.
You can use so many types of paper for this project. Origami papers create intricate and beautiful patterns. Scrapbook papers can be mixed and matched to create stunning looks. Packing paper and greeting cards can be used. Even magazine and newspaper clippings are fun options.
And this project is so easy on the budget, you can make a piece of jewelry for every outfit. One thing to keep in mind is that you will need to color copy the paper of your choice for best results.
large washing machine
origami or other decorative paper
scissors
Cutter
Glue stick
judikins diamond polish
pencil
1 yard leather cords
large wooden bead
leather clasp
flat nose pliers
1. Make a copy on origami printer or decorative paper. (Only a laser printed image will work with this project because only a laser image will prevent the colors from bleeding through when the diamond polish is applied.)
2. Place the washer on the laser printed paper and place it over the desired design area. Trace around the washing machine. Use a craft knife to cut out the center circle, and then use scissors to cut around the outside edge of the circle.
3. Place the washer smooth side down and stick the paper to the rough side with a glue stick.
4. Do not shake the diamond polish (this will create air bubbles). Apply diamond polish to the top of the washer. Then use a wooden skewer to spread the glaze, taking care to cover the entire surface of the washer. Let dry for 24 hours..
5. Create the necklace:Cut the cord to the desired length (fit around your neck and add 2 inches). Fold in half and thread the folded end through the center of the washer and thread the loose ends through the folded end.
6. Thread both ends of the string through a drawstring and slide the drawstring down into the washer.
7. Trim the ends of the cord to fit your neck, and then attach a leather jewelry clasp to the ends using flat-nose pliers.
You can create earrings, bracelets, and more necklaces just by using various sizes of washers and jewels. Be creative and have fun!
