Today I launched into uncharted territory and embarked on an ambitious experiment to lure kids away from screens. Since I was outnumbered (I was just a mom and there were 4 screens in the room), I decided I needed some heavy artillery, namely candy. Fortunately, the experiment was successful:the screens were ditched to make some homemade gum using a kit I got at Darby Smart, and everyone had a great (sticky) time. I think this could start a series of offline "screen rehab" projects that I will start with my kids. I hope it inspires you to fight those gaming tablets and controllers for just a minute or two and have fun.
Pour 1/2 c. of confectioners' sugar on the wax paper, and use the stick to make a well in the center.
Add the gummies, powdered flavoring, and corn syrup to the microwavable mug. It takes a long time to spill, which is apparently fun.
Microwave for 10 seconds on high, then stir, until completely melted. This is a step best left to adults, as this mixture gets hot and sticky.
Carefully pour the heated mixture into the sugar in the confectioners.
Use the stick to start blending the mix.
When it's cool enough, you can start using your hands to finish blending.
Add optional food coloring and fold to combine.
Spread the gum out in a big long snake..
It was quite sticky so I used scissors to cut it into individual pieces. Roll the gum pieces in the extra powdered sugar.
Wrap the gum in pieces of parchment paper.
