We've repurposed two kitchen cabinets that would normally go above a refrigerator into a handy entryway bench with extra storage for shoes.
Sand, prime and paint the cabinets. Allow plenty of time to dry between each coat.
Cut a 4x4 or 2x4 into blocks that will sit flush with the top of the cabinet. This is to provide a level surface for the top of the bench. Use wood glue to bond the wood to the top corners of the cabinets. Make sure they are flush with the top edge of the cabinets, don't go over it.
Measure and cut the 4x4 into eight 3" to 4" pieces for the feet of the bench. (You can also buy pre-cut bow legs.) Sand and finish or paint the legs as desired. We use the stain and then seal it with two coats of lacquer.
Apply wood glue to the feet. Place each under the corners. Screw them into place from inside the cabinet. Use at least three screws per foot.
Place the cabinets next to each other and make sure they are level. Adjust the height if necessary by sanding the feet.
To get the measurements for the bench top, measure the top of the cabinets then add 2" to the front and sides so you have a lip around the edge. Use a circular saw to cut the top.
Sand the edges of the table and finish as desired.
Apply wood glue to the corner bench support pieces. Place the table top on the cabinets and make sure it is centered and square. Insert a screw into the corner blocks from the inside of the cabinets. Make sure the screw is not too long to protrude through the top of the bench.

Add a protective sealant to the top of the bench. Use at least three coats and allow to dry completely.
