Also known as the "lily of the valleys", lily of the valley is a herbaceous plant that is native to Japan. It was during the Middle Ages that it made its appearance in Europe. It is mainly characterized by its bell-shaped flowers which are surrounded by two or three large leaves. Although the flowering period of this plant is quite short, it remains appreciated for its pure colors and its musky and sweet fragrance.
Once the flowering period is over, the lily of the valley reveals pretty red berries that will infuse color into your garden. This plant is not very demanding, but it still needs a shady area. Plant it preferably at the foot of a tree. To ensure healthy and rapid growth, be sure to provide it with well-drained, moist and loose soil. In addition, to appreciate the flowering in spring, plant the lilies of the valley from October, taking care to space them 10 cm apart while respecting a minimum depth of 3 cm.
Spring flower par excellence, the tulip is renowned for its bright and bold colors that brighten up flower beds, gardens or balconies. It is part of the bulb plant family and is native to Central Asia and the Mediterranean regions. Its flowering period is from February to May. The tulip comes in more than a hundred species and has several thousand varieties.
Among the main tulip families are the fleur-de-lis with its tapering petals, the triumph and its simple and elegant flowers, the parrot with large flowers, the fringed ones with serrated petals, etc. If you plan to leave your flowers in the ground, favor Kaufmanniana hybrids or even botanical species which have the advantage of not degenerating. Its flowering period is from March to April. It is advisable to plant it in wooded areas or on the edge of a hedge. Be careful, for optimal flowering, the bergenia needs as much light as possible. Places that are too shady are therefore not recommended.
