The idea is to merge a traditional ceramic tile with the technologies used in our touch screens. Clearly, this digital wallpaper consists of three layers of materials:a transparent glass, a layer of organic electronic compounds (it gets complicated!) and a ceramic support that supports everything. Just touch the walls of our bathroom for it to change from blue to orange. In the children's room, the walls can play funny video images. Even the front of our house can turn into Buckingham Palace (just that!).
Beyond the aesthetic aspect of their invention, researchers from the University of Pavia also imagine being able to produce smart floors. They would be programmed to detect the fall of an elderly person or a suspicious intrusion into our home. Innovative, no?
