How I Collect Seeds to Make Cheap Bird Balls.

How I Collect Seeds to Make Cheap Bird Balls.

Winter is coming soon, and our friends the birds will soon have trouble finding their food. Let's avoid ruining ourselves by buying fat balls! I invite you to discover how I make them without spending a fortune.

My Mission:Collect the Seeds in the Fields

You surely know it:at the end of September-beginning of October, it is the harvest season. To make our balls, we will focus on sunflower and wheat.

There are quite a few fields around my house. After the passage of the harvesters , I pick up the sunflower flowers that have fallen to the ground at the edge of the fields and the stalks of ears of wheat that have been forgotten by the harvester.

At home, I collect the seeds, crushing the wheat ears by hand and crushing the sunflower heads with a hammer in a basin.

My Home Recipe for Making Fat Balls

Ingredients

1 kg margarine 1 er price or unsalted beef fat. 800 g of seeds.

Meals

• I melt and add the seeds.

• I place iron wires or a strong wire in 8 molds (for example, small empty plastic yogurt pots), then I fill them with my fat / seeds mixture.

• I unmold when the mixture has cooled and I hang my balls high in my garden (on the branch of a tree, so that the birds are not attacked by cats in the middle of a meal and that they can enjoy themselves peacefully) .

> I can also offer them just the seeds to peck at.

During What Period?

I feed the birds from the first frosts, until spring, and I don't forget to give them water.

Our garden has therefore become a real refuge for them, and my sons have fun watching them fly from the living room, all amazed!

And you, do you have any homemade recipes for our feathered friends? Leave me a little comment!

Savings Achieved

A mixture of 5 kgs of birdseed costs around 6 € 90. By collecting the seeds in the fields, they cost me nothing. So I'm saving €6.90 this winter!

So instead, I can go buy some planks to build them a shelter.
