Summer is coming and the desire for a green retreat is increasing. For many people, the balcony is a great way to meet the need for nature and freedom. In addition to beautiful decoration and cozy furniture, lush flowering plants should not be missing in the extended living room. When selecting plants, the balcony orientation plays an important role, because different requirements apply depending on the compass direction. Plants for south, north, east and west balconies are presented in this balcony plant guide.
For sunbathers – the south-facing balcony
Sunbathers are especially happy with a south-facing balcony, because the sun shines here all day long. The home office and after-work yoga sessions are often moved outside during the summer months. Sun-hungry plants are ideal for south-facing balconies. These mainly include Mediterranean plants such as olive trees and oleanders or fragrant herbs such as lavender, thyme or basil. From home they are used to many hours of sunshine and economical water. But tropical beauties like geraniums, triplets, and convertible florets also thrive in the sun without any problems. The bright colors of the roses in particular make the balcony shine in a fresh light time and again. The play of colors of the green leaves in combination with the orange, yellow and pink flowers is reminiscent of an ice-cold, refreshing iced tea.
Note: Because the water on the sunny south-facing balconies evaporates faster, it is important to water the plants regularly. Watering system planters can help keep plants regularly hydrated.
North balcony – cool retreat in summer
On warm days, a north-facing balcony is a great retreat. Although only a few plants feel comfortable on a sunny balcony, it can be planted liberally. Shade friends like the hydrangea spread that summer feeling with their bright flowers. The popular ornamental shrubs require sufficient water as a basic condition for their impressive show flowers to thrive. But not every hydrangea species prefers shade. Owners of a north-facing balcony should use the Farm Hydrangea, Snowball Hydrangea or Climbing Hydrangea. This adaptive artist's luscious, colorful blooms come into their own in large, neutral tubs.
The best of both worlds – partial shade on east and west balconies
East or west-facing balconies are characterized by being in the sun half of the day and in the shade for the other half. Owners of an east-facing balcony enjoy the first rays of the day. At the end of the day, west-facing balconies receive the last rays of the day's sun. End the day with a well-deserved drink after work.
With both balconies it is important that the selected plants naturally thrive in both the sun and shade. Boxwood for example: because it is robust, it is not affected by the wind. The lily also feels at home on the partially shaded balcony. With its lush and fragrant flowers, the cult plant creates a summery atmosphere when you look out the window and puts you in a good mood.
A little tip: the plants should be watered in the shade if possible – in the morning on the west-facing balcony, in the evening on the east.
