Tulip season will start again in January and this cheerful spring flower will be available for more than 100 days. Traditionally, the start of the new season is celebrated with a huge picking garden on National Tulip Day (the third Saturday of January). About 20,000 visitors with more than 100 nationalities come to Dam Square in Amsterdam to pick a bunch of cheerfulness and fraternization. Due to COVID19, the event will not take place in 2021.
Here 10 tulip tips, facts and ideas:
National Tulip Day Since 2012, National Tulip Day has been the official start of a new tulip season. That is always on the third Saturday of January. In 2021 National Tulip Day will fall on January 16. Normally, for the 10th year in a row, growers would build a huge picking garden on Dam Square in Amsterdam with more than 200,000 tulips. The event attracts about 20,000 visitors from home and abroad. Due to COVID19, such a massive tulip party in Amsterdam is unfortunately not responsible.
Stubborn tulips
A vase full of tulips brings some life to the brewery. They often grow a little further and hang over the edge of the vase in a stubborn way. Do you want them to stand upright for as long as possible? Then put them in the vase for half an hour after purchase with the wrapping paper or sleeve still tight around it. Then the stems have sucked themselves up with water, they are firmer and you can remove the paper. You can also opt for a tall (glass) vase that provides support for the stems.

Tribute
“A thousand yellows, a thousand reds, wish you the very best. What my mouth cannot say, tulips from Amsterdam say”. The best-known lines from Herman Emmink's song were given an extra meaning last spring. Tulip growers paid tribute to the healthcare sector with a gigantic tulip mosaic and the christening of a special, red-yellow tulip:“Stay Strong”. Video images of this tribute went around the world. Tulip with bulb Tulips for the vase are usually stripped of the flower bulb. At some flower shops, however, you will also find tulips with the bulb still attached. This emphasizes the origin of the flower and ensures a natural appearance. Of course in a glass vase so that you can see the bulbs with roots. If you tie them like a sheaf of corn (or have them tied by a florist), the bouquet is extra sturdy and you can also put it on a flat tray. Make sure that the bulbs with their small roots are just under water.
Happy and happy
Ask any person what emotion the tulip evokes and the answer is likely to be 'joy'. Years ago, research was done that showed that the tulip is the 'happiest flower in the Netherlands'. That makes the tulip ideal for making yourself, but also your mother, sister, neighbour, partner or colleague happy.
What's in a name
New tulips are added regularly, often with an official christening ceremony. The name is well thought out because, for example, people want to honor an organization or person for their good or special contribution to society. For example, around National Tulip Day, the Make-A-Wish (2020), Quinty Trustfull (2019), OG3NE (2017) and the Red Cross (2014) foundation, among others, were given their own tulips named after themselves.
Flexible tulips You can bend the stems of tulips into a special shape without breaking them. First let the tulips dry for a few hours. You will automatically feel when the stems are limp and pliable. Then you apply the shape you want (for example bent in a round fishbowl). Make sure that the bottom of the handle is at the bottom to absorb the water. Then the stem will become firm again.
Tulip harvest Tulip season is the period from mid-January to May in which all types and colors are available. Dutch growers (or actually:tulip foragers) harvest the tulips at the moment when the flower color is just visible. For example, they are brought farm-fresh to flower auctions and florists. They can easily shine in the vase for 10 days at average room temperature. The cooler the house, the longer you can enjoy tulips.
How many tulips…? The Netherlands is known worldwide for its cut tulips. About 2 billion tulips are produced every year. The cheerful flowers are exported to almost every country in the world. There are more than 3,000 different varieties in dozens of colors and shades.

Spring mix
Tulips are friends with everyone, including fellow flowers in a vase. Very beautiful are combinations with blossom branches, ranunculus and hyacinths. Do you put tulips and daffodils together? Pay attention:the stems of the daffodil secrete a kind of mucus, which makes other flowers bloom faster. You can prevent this by first placing the daffodils in their own vase for a day. Then cut the stems again (no more slime comes out) and add them to the tulips. There is also special flower food to neutralize the slime of the daffodil.
