A lot of people don't have a garden. Drying clothes outside is therefore not an option for many. Therefore, drying laundry in the living area is often unavoidable. But be careful:the warm indoor air absorbs the evaporated water from the laundry, increasing the humidity in the rooms. When the warm, moist air hits cold surfaces, especially windows and balcony doors, it condenses. Here we reveal with four handy tips how to effectively dry the laundry and improve the living environment at the same time.
Shake out the laundry before hanging it
Fresh out of the washing machine, the laundry is often very wrinkled. If it is then forgotten in the machine, it can quickly become clammy. One trick is to shake out the garments individually before hanging them up. This loosens the fibers that are pressed by spinning and may save ironing. Another benefit of shaking out is that it slows down wear, especially on T-shirts.
Make enough space for the laundry
To dry properly, wet clothes not only need fresh air, but also space. If the laundry is too close together, it will stay clammy and damp for longer. This is due to the humidity of the other garments, which are still circulating in the air. Heavy clothing, such as jeans or sweatshirts in particular, will then need more time to dry. This can be remedied by not hanging too many clothes on a rack, or by purchasing a large drying rack.
Regular ventilation
Fresh laundry contains a lot of moisture for closed rooms. There are two liters of water in a basket of wet laundry. If the window is closed, the moisture will remain in the apartment. This can then lead to an increase in humidity of up to 30%. The moisture penetrates the walls and forms the perfect breeding ground for mould. Regular ventilation is therefore essential. To do this, open the windows wide for about ten minutes in the morning and evening and let in fresh air. This stimulates air circulation and prevents the moisture in the wet laundry from staying in the apartment.
Summer on balconies
If you have the luxury of a garden, a terrace or a balcony, you can of course dry your laundry there. The laundry dries faster (especially in the summer), and if you dry the laundry outside, the clothes will have a nice fresh scent.
