Working from home is more important than ever. A challenge for some, a relief for others. Whether you like it or not, this is how you create a nice and quiet workplace at home.
More people than ever are currently working from home due to all the measures surrounding Covid-19. Where one person benefits completely, because there are no more travel costs and no travel time, the other is not in his element at all. Working from home has advantages and disadvantages, as with everything.
The advantages of working from home are:
Of course working from home also has disadvantages:
Whether you experience more advantages or disadvantages also depends on the workplace you have at home. If you only have a small corner where it is not pleasant to work, you will soon experience more after- than benefits of working from home. Fortunately, you can create a nice workplace for yourself with the tips below.
Maybe you think you need a big house or a separate room to set up a nice workplace for yourself. However, that is not true. Of course it is nice if you have a room all to yourself. Then, if other housemates are at home, you can withdraw yourself and work undisturbed. A separate office also works very well with meetings.
As said:a private room works best, but the most important thing is a nice desk. You can choose from countless models of desks. It is important when choosing that the desk fits both the available space and you. The larger the desk, the greater the chance that you will place anything and everything (sometimes superfluous stuff) on it. In any case, make sure that your laptop/pc has plenty of space and that you can sit comfortably at the table.
A neat and clean environment simply works much better than an environment where there is clutter. When you think of clutter, you can think of toys lying around, a dining table full of knick-knacks and other things that are out of place. Before you start your work, make sure you have everything cleaned up and ready. Then there are no distractions and you don't have to worry if you unexpectedly have to meet with video on.
Especially in a small house it is difficult to find the peace that is sometimes necessary for working. You might consider putting your desk in the bedroom if there's enough space there. If this is not feasible, make sure you have a laptop that you can move easily and quickly. When the children come home from school and you still have to meet or work, you can retire to another room in the house with your laptop and all.
When designing your home, you probably never considered that you would have to work from home. Your house may feel wonderful when you are at home, but there are things you would rather see differently if you have to work all day in the same environment. So make sure to use calm, neutral colors in your work environment. A few plants not only provide peace of mind, but also conviviality and extra oxygen. Make sure there are not too many accessories around, they only cause distraction and unrest.
It is autumn and soon winter. That means it gets dark early. Working in the dark is not pleasant and a good way to work comfortably at home is to ensure that there is sufficient light. Preferably opt for natural light through a window or door with glass. A good desk lamp is also indispensable.
If more people are at home, it automatically creates more unrest. Fortunately, you can do something about this. Make agreements with each other, so that there is peace and quiet to be able to work quietly, alternating or not, without being disturbed. This is slightly easier with older children and adults than with children, but you can also make agreements with children. Don't be ashamed if you let them watch something extra on TV in these circumstances. There are plenty of educational programs, so you don't have to feel guilty.
Whether you can work comfortably from home or not is largely up to you. If for some reason working from home does not work for you, always consult with your employer. You may be able to do other work from the office for the time being, where you come into contact with others as little as possible.
Do you work from home or do you just have to go to work?
