If you live in a house or have pets, you know probably the Swiffer dusters.
You know those disposable brooms and wipes that catch dirt and dust around the house.
If you use this system to clean your home then you surely know how expensive it is to replace disposable wipes, feather dusters and other dust catchers.
It is true that this system is very practical, but it is also a money pit (not to mention the ecological disaster that this entails).
Calculate how much it costs you over the year and your wallet will hurt...
The good news is that we have found a solution for you.
We've picked out the best Swiffer tips to save you money. Watch:
This trick is not only a cheaper alternative, but it's also a great way to avoid having to throw away the wipes after each use. All you need is a pair of chunky winter socks, like this one:
For only €3 you can buy a pair of winter socks and use them as a "wipe" to clean your house.
Besides being comfortable to wear, they also work great for catching dust and dirt around the house.
You place the sock over the Swiffer broom and that's it!
Look at all the dust and dirt collected!
What's great is that after sweeping the floor, you can easily remove the sock and put it in the washing machine. On the other hand, do not use fabric softener, as this can reduce its effectiveness in capturing dust.
There you go, you now have an infinite supply of wipes to clean the floor and all this for only 3 €!
You can reuse this sock as many times as you want instead of throwing the wipes in the trash after each use... It's still more economical and ecological, isn't it?
Do you use the Swiffer Wet Jet broom rather than the classic Swiffer broom? So here's a tip that will save you money.
How? 'Or' What ? By reusing an old empty bottle and making your own homemade refill.
All it takes is a hole in the bottom of the Wet Jet refill.
Then, pour in this homemade recipe consisting of 50% water, 50% white vinegar and 2 or 3 drops of dishwashing liquid.
It's still much more economical and ecological.
Plus, you avoid chemicals, because at least now you know what's inside the bottle...
It's crazy how much dust can build up in the house in just 1 week!
If you are used to taking out your Swiffer duster to make it disappear, this trick should please you.
Instead of always having to buy disposable duster refills, which are expensive, make your own duster! Here's how:
First, cut 4 pieces of fleece fabric respecting the following measurements:11 cm by 18 cm .
For the fabric, you can use the bottom of old pajamas that you no longer wear, as is the case here.
In case you were wondering where those measurements come from, it's about the size of a Swiffer duster.
The pieces of fabric must have a rectangular shape as below.
Then take 2 cut pieces and place them on top of each other on the "wrong side" as below.
It is sometimes difficult to tell the "good" from the "bad" side of a fleece fabric, but here it is quite simple.
Save the other 2 pieces for later.
Now place these 2 pieces of fabric vertically on the sewing machine.
Sew a line in the middle, leaving a margin at the top and bottom of 1.5 cm.
Now, about 2 cm from the line you just sewed, sew a parallel line on the left and another on the right.
You should now have 3 parallel lines spaced about 2cm apart.
Then, use a pair of scissors to cut fringes along the 2 outer lines, approximately every 1 cm.
Be careful not to cut the seam lines you just sewed.
Now take the 2 pieces you had set aside and put one piece on a flat surface with the "wrong side" showing.
Then place the 2 sewn pieces on top. Then place the last piece on top with the "good side" showing.
At the end you should have the 2 pieces sewn together sandwiched between the other 2 unsewn pieces.
With the sewing machine, sew a line in the middle of these 4 pieces. Don't forget to leave a margin at the top and bottom about 1.5 cm from the edge.
After sewing this line, cut the sides of the 2 upper pieces, spacing them about 1 cm apart.
Be careful not to cut the previously sewn lines. Cut the top piece first and then the bottom piece to avoid cutting the sewn lines in the middle pieces.
Finally, all you have to do is insert your Swiffer duster handle between the 2 pieces of fabric located in the middle.
And you have a great homemade, washable and reusable duster!
This trick works with fleece, but you can also use microfiber. The advantage of these 2 fabrics is that they easily catch dust and animal hair.
