Creating human faces in the pots and adding plants for "hair" is a fun way for kids to bring container gardening to life. Invite them to use their imaginations to create different facial expressions and help choose the right "hair." They'll also love giving the occasional haircut.
Draw ideas for faces on paper first. Decide which craft supplies you will use for various functions. Consider, for example, a zipper "mouth," "pipe cleaner" or "half cork" ears, interlocking "eyebrows," a cork disk "nose," and button "eyes." Little ones may find it easier to use paint or markers to create faces.Put these supplies in a covered work area near your planter.
Fill the pot partially with potting soil, leaving enough room at the top for the plant's root ball.
Add the plant and cover with potting soil, pressing the soil firmly around the roots. Deep water.
With adult supervision, use waterproof epoxy according to the manufacturer's instructions to attach the facial features to the pots according to your sketched plans. (For the "ears" of the pipe cleaner sticking out of the sides of the pot, use masking tape.)
Let your children's imagination run wild:create sparkly "eyes" with sparkly buttons, split a cork lengthwise to create a "nose", add tiles for "teeth" and use large leaves for "ears". Other options:glue on pink "cheeks" made from red felt circles; Give the head of your plant a collar made from fabric scraps; or put on earrings made of small polished stones or glass stones. Or use string to create a big smile filled with tiny shell teeth. Twist the pipe cleaners together to create goggles.
