The joints of your shower or bathtub have aged:they have turned black due to mold and dirt that have become embedded in them. Your bathroom has become very ugly and above all you risk micro leaks. Do not panic, DIY enthusiasts or seasoned, everyone can change the seals in their bathroom.
First of all, you should know that it takes a minimum of 24 hours to dry for new seals, so make arrangements because your bathroom will therefore be unavailable during this time.
Gather all the materials you need:a cutter, white spirit and a cloth to clean the corners. If white spirit is too harsh for you, substitute white vinegar. Then you will need a tape, choose the paper one which is easier to remove and does not leave traces, it will be used to make your boundaries. Then take a straightener for finishing the joints, it is optional because you can use your finger, a good old handyman trick. Finally, the main product:the silicone gasket. The best is to choose it in a spray gun for a practical and easy application.
Start by removing the old seals. Use your cutter, scrape the joints well and don't leave any bits in the corners of your shower or bathtub. Clean after passing the cutter with a cloth soaked in white spirit and be sure to let it dry afterwards. Otherwise, you will also find anti-silicone products in DIY stores that you just have to apply to remove the remains of the old seals, but they require a waiting time of 2 to 3 hours. This step is important because the new seal will not adhere properly if there are residues, even very small ones, and you risk micro leaks.
Once the corners are clean, take your tape and make a delimitation by following the edge of your bathtub or your shower. Then get your silicone gun, as we have seen. It will be easier for you to apply it with the appropriate device. Press down on the gun and the joint will spread on its own. Then pass the straightener. The advantage of having a straightener is that it slides easily over the joint which spreads well as it should. But, if you don't have a straightener, use your finger. Dampen your thumb or forefinger and run it gently over the joint to smooth it out without it sticking.
If your seal has overflowed on the wall, remove with the cutter or wipe it with a cloth and white spirit, being careful not to remove the new seal, then gently remove the tape.
Your seals are refurbished and all you have to do is admire your work. Don't forget to let the seals dry for at least 24 hours before using your shower or bathtub.
