How to properly store your garden tools

It is important to take care of your garden tools by leaving them indoors if you want to ensure a long life for them. Here are some tips to help you organize and store your gardening supplies.

How to properly store your garden tools

Store your equipment inside

Store your tools in a cool, dry place. Moisture will cause rust spots to appear on the metal and cause the wood to rot. The sun and heat can also deform your material and crack the handles.

Regarding motorized tools, such as lawn mowers, or outdoor power equipment, it is also important to keep them out of direct sunlight and rain. Rubber and plastic do not tolerate heat well. Moisture will cause rust to form and may damage the engine.

Clean your tools

Before storing them, remember to remove traces of mud and accumulated dirt. Rinse your tools and scrub with a wire brush to remove excess.

You can put vinegar to remove rust stains, as well as linseed oil on the wood to protect it from humidity and prevent it from cracking.

And if a stain appears on your clothes, don't worry, this article tells you how to quickly remove stains from clothes.

It is advisable to store garden equipment high up, preferably on the walls. Most tools have a hole in the end of the handle to insert a string through and then hang them up. If they don't have one, you can always make the hole yourself.

You can also buy mounting clips and wall brackets to hang them on the wall.

Try to optimize the space available in your garage. If you are lucky enough to have a large garden, the best solution would be to install a garden shed that you can devote entirely to storage. Indeed, stored in a garage, shovels and rakes are mixed with other objects and can be bumped and fall on you or your car.

Storage Ideas :

  • Use a wooden pallet that you have previously attached to the wall to store bulky equipment
  • Repurpose an old rake with its handle removed to make a tool holder that you can keep close at hand
  • Use pegboards or hooks on the walls of your garage or shed to hang your gardening equipment
  • Put your shovels and rakes in a large trash can, upside down. And if they are too heavy, put a brick in the bottom.
