What to plant in the garden in November?
Yes, it's not because it's autumn and it's starting to get cold that everything stops.
On the contrary!
Here I show you everything you can still plant in your garden in November.
Indeed, most spring plants are sown before winter. So now, in November, is the time to get started.
But the important thing is to know which ones.
With the help of my market gardener grandfather, I have compiled a list of everything that is planted in the garden and vegetable patch in November.
Vegetables, fruit trees, flowers ...There is something for every taste. Look at everything that grows easily in November:
It is the star vegetable of cooks in winter and early spring.
And to be able to harvest it in the spring, it must be transplanted at the end of October/beginning of November.
The young cabbage shoot will then develop slowly in winter. She will have a growth spurt on the first fine days.
If you live in an area where it freezes at night, you will need to think about protecting the young plants.
Otherwise, cabbage can remain unprotected in temperate regions.
Remember to water the soil regularly, but never in the evening before a night of frost.
If you live in a temperate region or in the south of France, you can plant your spring cauliflowers.
They will mature in the spring.
If you are in a colder region, plant them in a greenhouse or sheltered from frost.
Same for peas and beans.
Sow them in the ground in temperate regions or under cover for cold regions.
So you can harvest and eat them in the spring.
Dig a furrow about 5 cm deep and place a seed every 10 cm or so before covering and watering.
Here is a herb that we could not do without in the kitchen!
Plus, it's so easy to grow, you can even grow it on a potted balcony.
Only obligation:it needs sun, even in the middle of winter .
Plant the garlic bulbs in the fall, about 30 cm apart, in well-drained soil...and let nature take its course!
Like garlic, the gray shallot goes into the ground at the beginning of November.
Plant the bulbs about 2 cm below well-drained soil enriched with green manure.
A place in the sun, in the vegetable garden or on the terrace, is appreciated by the shallot.
If you bought a young rhubarb plant in a garden center, or if you divided a plant, November is the right time to put it in the ground.
Choose a place that will be very sunny in summer , aerate the soil, put some green manure, and plant the rhubarb.
Cover it with mulch, especially if you live in an area with a continental climate.
To have more aromatic grass plants, they can be divided.
This division is done in autumn.
And the planting can be done straight away in the ground for the south of France, under shelter for the rest.
Mint, chives, thyme, savory, oregano, sage support division very well.
To divide an aromatic plant, simply take out the clod of earth, and cut it in two with a spade or a knife.
Be careful to keep enough roots on both sides.
Chervil can be planted in the ground or in a pot without any problem.
If it is already adult, just let it grow naturally and protect it from frost if necessary.
For a summer harvest, sow chervil in November, in a greenhouse or under cover.
It will take root slowly to gain momentum on sunny days.
Young fruit trees, especially those purchased bare-rooted in garden centres, are planted in early November.
Apple, pear, cherry, peach, apricot :enough to make a great orchard!
Choose their final place well and dig a big hole.
Add a little green manure, plant the young tree in the ground, then water.
My advice:take a good look at the weather forecast before doing this operation.
The ideal would be to have 4 or 5 fine days in a row without frost at night.
Also be aware that there is little chance that they will produce fruit in the first years.
They must be given time to establish their root system.
For raspberries, currants, mulberries, blackcurrants ...it's the same thing.
Whether you divided them or bought them potted, now is the time to plant them so they can root for the winter.
Same technique as for fruit trees:
Choose a sunny spot, dig a hole, add green manure, plant the bush and water.
If necessary, protect the roots with a thick mulch.
Don't forget that these small trees also thrive in a pot on a terrace.
With a little luck, you will have your first berries the following summer.
To have beautiful tulips in the spring, the bulbs must have frozen (or been cold) during the winter.
Hence the importance of planting them in the fall so that they spend the winter in the ground.
For late varieties of tulips such as peony, parrot or black tulips, early November planting is recommended.
Simply put the bulbs in the ground at least 8/10 cm deep.
And it also works for hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses or narcissus.
My tip:for staggered flowering in the spring, I plant my bulbs 3 times, about 10 days apart.
This way, I can enjoy my spring flowers, which bloom little by little, for longer.
I love this flower which symbolizes Christmas.
And to be sure to see it bloom during the holidays, you have to plant the bulb from November.
Why ? Because it takes about 6 weeks to grow and flower.
Indoor amaryllis can grow up to 50cm tall and have 4 huge flowers per stem.
Plant the bulb in a pot barely larger than it and bury it 2/3 deep.
Water and put the pot in a bright place, but without direct scorching sun.
Guess the best?
A single bulb, if well cared for, can bloom again every year for 10 to 12 years. Not bad, right?
November is also the perfect time to plant your new roses.
All types of roses are concerned:shrubs, climbers or bushes.
Thus, they will have time to take root perfectly before the good weather...and perhaps give their first flowers in the summer.
Remember to mulch the foot of the young rosebush to spend the winter, especially if you live in an area subject to regular frost.
What better way to have some flowers in winter? It gives color and balm to the heart.
We often think that in winter there are no flowers that can resist. Yet....
Whether in a bed, a planter or a container, you can enjoy pretty plants to plant or transplant from November.
Cyclamen, ornamental cabbage, heather, heuchera... And the best? Thought.
It withstands frost down to almost -10°C and its flowers remain colorful all winter.
To make a hedge or to decorate a garden, ornamental bushes are very popular.
Berberis, laurel, forsythia, charcoal, holly, shrimp willow, boxwood, or even dogwood...
November is a good time to put them in the ground .
Again, they will have time to establish their roots well before the first spring.
And if the winter has not been too harsh, you will enjoy the first flowers very quickly.
If you live in a cold region, protect the base of the bush with mulch.
If you live in a temperate region or if you have a greenhouse , you can plant, sow and grow your vegetables without any problem to harvest them in winter.
Cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, parsnip, turnip, fennel, leek, chard, black radish...
It may be enough to mulch if you leave them in the ground to protect them from a little frost.
