Buy all poplar pre-cut in 4-foot lengths.
Using the stud finder and pencil, mark the studs at the desired height and location.
Transfer the stud locations onto the 1x6-inch poplar board (used as the ledger).
Countersink two holes in the ledger for each bolt location. Countersink the 1x2-inch poplar (used as a spacer) every eight inches.
Secure the spacer and 1x16 (used as a counter) using the piano hinge.
Cut the 1x4 poplar stock into two 12-inch lengths to create the supports.
Secure the brackets flush with the top of the ledger with the 10-inch butterfly hinges on each end of the ledger.
Attach ledger to wall with 2-1/2-inch screws, countersunk holes and studs marked on wall.
With the brackets folded inward, secure the spacer to the ledger with the 2-1/2-inch screws through the countersunk holes in the spacer. Raise the countertop and paint or stain if desired.
