October, and planting garlic in temperate zones.
In the south, we plant the garlic in autumn. Just be careful of water stagnation that would cause them to rot. The trick is to plant the bulbs on mounds of about ten cm (billon) and to push the garlic of 3 cm maximum. Obviously garlic prefers sandy soils and without nitrogen fertilization recent; forget about adding manure when planting.
Oriental Garlic (allium ampeloprasum =vine leek) gives cloves larger than ordinary garlic (allium sativum =garlic from seed). Its taste would be more pronounced and would be at the origin of the nocturnal separation of couples (in other words, sleeping at the "hotel of the turned ass" for the followers of raw garlic at dinner. We will have warned you.)
Another garlic with the same virtues, Rocambole . Nothing to do with the soap opera of the 60s whose 3rd season was called la belle jardinière , (yes it's true!) rocambole garlic (allium sativum var. Ophioscorodon =snake garlic?) has a milder taste than common garlic (so see above…) and has edible bulbils at the top of its stem.
Whichever garlic is chosen, this condiment will be a source of pleasure; It is eaten raw, cooked, cloves and leaves, even bulbils. It is a bactericide, a vermifuge, it prevents sunstroke... The varieties with white tunics are intended for conservation, the red tunics for fresh consumption, (the Blue Tunics remaining at the BDthèque)
Garlic is planted in the waning moon and away from the fabaceae (legumes) that are peas, broad beans and beans. Garlic shoots the bacteria contained in the roots of legumes, and the latter bring nitrogen to the garlic which does not want more than that. Incompatibility of temper, do not insist. And what is valid for garlic, is valid for all alliums:onion, shallot, spring onion, chives, leek, and decorative garlic.
You can consult a superb article on garlic, written by Eric BIRLOUEZ, consultant agronomist and teacher in Food History and Sociology. He notes that garlic was perhaps the viagra of the Middle Ages:" A proverb of the time asserted:"When a man in bed […] can only love his wife once, let him eat garlic and leeks […] and the following night he will love her three times. » http://ericbirlouez.fr/articles/a1.html (or it's the sofa because of the smell...NDLA)
