If you have decided on the ideal location to put the shelf that will hold your books, photos or trinkets, it is time to take action and get started. After choosing your shelf, before moving on to the installation stage, make sure you have the necessary tools. To install a shelf, here is the complete list of materials you may need:a spirit level, a tape measure, a screwdriver, a pencil, screws, an impact drill, dowels and a hammer. Depending on the type of wall you are going to put the shelf on, you will need to use different types of dowels or drill bits for the hammer drill. Do not panic, DIY is very simple.
First trace in pencil the location where the shelf will be located using the spirit level to be sure that it will be placed straight. If the shelf does not have mounting holes, position brackets just below the shelf. If fixing holes exist, pass the pencil through them, and mark. To drill the wall, you will need a drill bit the same size as the screws on the shelf. If your holes aren't wide enough, you'll have to force the screws in, and if they're too wide, your shelf won't last long. For Placoplâtre walls, you will need Molli dowels, otherwise screws with the diameter of the holes will suffice. Gently tap the pegs into the end holes. You can then screw the shelf. Check with the spirit level. If everything is straight, finish screwing in the other holes, if not adjust.
