Photo walls are in. Even more than ever. You will find photo walls in all kinds of shapes, sizes and designs and that is what makes it so beautiful. Even though this way of hanging photos is very trendy, no wall is the same and that means that you always have something unique in your home.
In our previous house I also made a start with the perfect gallery wall for us with all kinds of 'old' photos. As said, it was a start, with the intention to eventually hang the entire wall full. But before that, we moved. And despite the fact that our new house has more than enough space, I haven't got around to creating a nice wall for the photos yet. That's because of all the renovations, of course. But there will come a day…. then we are mostly ready and I can get back to work here too!

First I would like to show you how I came up with our 'intermediate solution' because I would like to have some beautiful posters as decoration on the cupboard, but I am not yet ready to make an entire gallery wall in our new house. . The latter is due to renovations and the fact that I have not yet made a definitive choice of color. So for the time being I started with a number of posters in frames in our large closet in the living room.
I chose our wardrobe because of the Texture Line Bun posters posters , Grass and Watercolor Kiss to combine. The colors black, natural and brown match perfectly and also go well with the cabinet itself, which consists of concrete and oak. Because I have them on the oak shelf I have a black wooden frame done around. I could also have opted for a natural shade, but then I should have put the posters on the concrete-look shelf and I thought that didn't fit as well. As you can see, I deliberately chose different heights for the frames to keep it a bit more playful. What do you think of the result?
If you would like to make a gallery wall, there are a number of 'guidelines' that can help you on your way to the perfect gallery wall for you. I am happy to share them with you. For starters, you can of course get inspired on Pinterest. Or at poster suppliers, for example.
The great thing about a unique gallery wall is that you look for the variety between personal photos, nice posters with quotes (or just beautiful images ) and other wall decoration or inspirational imagery †
First of all, choose your personal photos yourself. These form the basis of your unique gallery wall. Are you going for a gallery wall in one or two colours? Do you take a specific color theme as a basis, for example matching the color on your wall, or are you looking for contrast? Or do you turn it into a cozy colorful wall that radiates cheerfulness?
In the photos above you can see how you can beautifully combine a gallery wall with the colors you have on the wall or in the rest of your room. This creates a unity that provides peace of mind, despite the fact that you still have a 'busy' wall. The photo of Desenio also nicely shows how you can other home decoration like a mirror in your gallery wall can process. As long as the color combination fits, that's no problem.
Once you've decided what you want to do with the colors, and you've found your personal photos with it, then move on to the rest. If you would also like quotes on the wall, first determine which quote(s) you would like and then look at which colors are appropriate. A quote does not have to be in the same color, or in standard black of course. And if you have an inspiring sentence in your head, you can also have your own quote printed on a poster.
Most people do opt for frames, and to be honest .. then your photos and posters will remain the most beautiful. In our 'old' gallery wall we had no frames for a few photos, but that is because these are real old photos that were pasted on thick hardboard. There was no decent list around this. To stay in the old style, I opted for a combination with old silver photo frames.
You can actually do two things with the lists. Choose all different types of frames in the same color, or choose different colors of frames, but in the same type of design. This way you create a gallery wall that is perfect in terms of unity and yet is not boring to look at.
Tip:Do you have different frames at home but in all kinds of colors? Then buy a cheap spray can from Action and spray all your photo frames in the same color. This way you can use all your lists on a low budget.
Don't have a lot of budget, but would you like to place your photos and posters in a 'frame'? Then use washi tape! As you can see above, you can achieve fantastic results with this. A little creativity is required, I admit. But you can do a lot with it! I think it's fantastic!
Positioning the photos, posters and home decor can be tricky. It is then a smart idea to make the gallery wall on paper so that you have an idea of the positions you prefer to hold. You can then vary a bit.
First you decide which part of your wall you want to use for the gallery wall. After that, if you want to do it really smart, you can cut out the photo frames you have in small (to scale) from paper and distribute (again to scale) over the place where you want to hang them. This way you can slide until you are satisfied with the result.
Slightly less handy but also a good idea:ask your partner to hold a few against the wall (with nose, hand and feet for example 😉 and quickly mark where they should go.
Good luck making your gallery wall! Do you want to share your results? Be my guest!
