1. Plant your peppers in a location with direct sun exposure (at least 10 hours a day).
2. To promote air circulation, leave a space of about 50 cm between each foot, and a little less for the pepper plants.
3. Climb the taller varieties on a stake or a trellis, to prevent the stem from breaking due to the wind or the weight of its fruit.
4. Keep the soil moist for good growth of your plants. Make sure they get at least 2.5 cm of water per week (or 3.75 liters of water per day in hot weather).
5. Peppers need soil that is loamy and drains easily. Avoid adding too much nitrogen, as too much can lead to heavy leaf development and little or no fruit. The ideal soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.5.
6. Add a layer of mulch (2 to 3 cm) around your plants, which helps retain soil moisture and regulate its temperature.
7. Pinch off the early flowers, which has the effect of producing a higher yield and larger fruit size.
8. To protect your plants from the cutworm (a caterpillar also called "cutworm"), put cardboard rolls of toilet paper around each plant, driven into the ground about 2.5 cm deep.
9. To pick the fruit, cut the stem with a sharp knife or secateurs. If you pull on the pepper to detach it, you risk damaging the branches of the plant.
10. You can harvest the peppers as soon as they are green and shiny. The longer the pepper remains on the plant, the sweeter it will be (but the yield may be reduced). If you let them ripen on the plant, they will turn yellow, orange, then red.
Once picked, garden peppers will keep for a few days in a basket, like tomatoes, courgettes and other garden vegetables.
In the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, the peppers keep a little longer.
