Choosing a new floor? What should you pay attention to and take into account?

Yes! Finally the time has come and we have started the renovation. Besides the fact that we now have a lot to do physically, there are also a lot of new choices to make. Such as choosing a new floor. I like it though, so I don't mind poking around, thinking and pouring my ideas out to Frank. Fortunately, he doesn't mind that I always discuss them with him when I'm overflowing with ideas. And I can tell you that in recent years a lot of ideas about floors have passed in review in my brain!

What do you pay attention to when choosing a new floor?

As mentioned, I have been working with floors in my head for several years now. In our previous house we went from an old tiled floor to a wooden floor in fifteen years' time, after which we also removed it after a leak and had a cast floor lubricated. I can therefore say that I have the necessary experience in choosing a new floor and that I have already tried the necessary floors.

And so there are all kinds of new choices to make in our new house, including about a new floor. I am not a fan of the slate in our living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway. So I quickly said that choosing a new floor would not be long in coming, haha. But now we are almost two years further. Not surprising, because we have already completed the necessary renovations and the new floor was not yet a real priority.

The renovation we have now started brings a new floor closer because a number of walls have to be demolished and we opt for other doors. Both ensure that parts of our current floor disappear and that there are holes in the floor in a few places. And if you suddenly start looking for a new floor, which floor do you choose? I will take you along in my choices that - after the necessary considerations - have led to a nice choice for a new floor from Ambiant Floors.

Considerations-in-choosing-the-floor

The following considerations were of great importance to us when choosing the floor.

A new floor that is easy to keep clean

First of all, it is important to us that we choose a new floor that is resistant to pets, adolescents and many children on the floor. With a dog in the house and three cats, you can imagine that this is taken into account when choosing a new floor. It must be a floor that is not only strong, but also easy to clean. Not only because of the pets, by the way, but also because of the sixteen-year-old teenager who regularly has friends over and his younger teenage sister who asks many friends every week to play and stay over.

In addition to the children and the animals, we also like to party as soon as we can. We love to celebrate birthdays, so we always invite everyone and as soon as we can come up with another reason to invite people, we will. A new floor must therefore be able to withstand that.

In that regard, there are a number of floors that 'so' fall off for downstairs. No carpet for us and also no wooden floor that cannot be easily mopped.

Which color floor to choose:concrete-look is for me 'the bomb'

When choosing the new floor, there are a few other things for us to take into account. I am completely in the concrete look phase. Check out our concrete look dining table here, for example. I have been a fan of concrete for years, because the cast floor in our previous house also had a concrete look. But I will no longer choose a cast floor myself, at least not for the ground floor. It is easy to maintain, so in that respect it would qualify, but it is also very sensitive to scratches.

And the new floor we choose this time should in any case be less sensitive to scratches. Especially because we live in the countryside and still bring more sand inside than before. Fortunately, there are several options if you are looking for concrete block. I also thought about a herringbone floor. Looks very warm and cosy, but in the end the concrete look we have chosen is a lot more practical in terms of color. Not only to combine, but also because you see less on it.

Preferably choose a low-noise floor

A laminate floor would be possible, but that was not our preference. I personally think that's more for the bedrooms. Especially because laminate makes a bit more noise when you walk over it and a dog that keeps pooping behind me taps a lot on a laminate floor.

With a PVC floor, for example, you have much less trouble with this, it is much quieter. Choosing a PVC floor as a new floor is therefore certainly an option. Preferably no glued PVC floor. We really want to expand again. Given the financial picture, that will take a while, but a floor that we can remove by then is nice. Click PVC may be an option and I have seen a beautiful concrete look variant at Ambiant Floors.

By the way, when choosing a new floor on the ground floor, I also thought of residential concrete, but because we are still going to build an extension and we want to remove the entire floor in order to lay a well-insulated floor, this has also been dropped for now. The same applies in this case to a tiled floor. Preferably a floor that we can eventually remove again so as not to damage the floor during construction. This way we can also reuse the floor.

A floor that matches the existing underfloor heating

Even though our subfloor is not well insulated, we do have underfloor heating. The new floor to be chosen must therefore also be able to cope with underfloor heating. check.

Anyway, with four important points in mind when choosing a new floor, I went looking:

  • Easy to clean
  • Concrete look style
  • Low noise
  • Good combination with underfloor heating

What kind of floor is it going to be in the end?

After the necessary search, we eventually arrived at a PVC click floor and we made our choice from the vtwonen collection by ambient. Beautiful floors with unique patterns that also include concrete look variants. I've been debating between two different variants for a while, but we went for this one above because I think we see the least on this.

First I 'looked at' a similar floor with the room planner of Ambiant Floors and then we requested a number of samples before we made our final choice.

Make a choice with a roomplanner

While viewing our living room with the room planner, I did take a trip to herringbone floors. I also really like that one. But hubby is very firm in his choice… not a fishbone. Then in our case there remains concrete look 😉 .

Below you can see the difference between the herringbone and the concrete look; ideal when choosing a new floor to get an idea of what your choice will look like!

The above concrete look floor is not exactly what we have chosen, but it does give an idea of the style you are looking for. You only have to upload a photo of your own living room and then you can immediately choose the floors you like.

I also looked at our chill area that way:
