We moved last year and are lucky enough to live in a beautiful location in a large farm/country house. However, there is still a lot that needs to be done here. And now it's time to pimp our kitchen! I will take you through what we are going to do to make the kitchen(s) more modern and 'more usable'. In addition, I also dig up the necessary ideas that I personally think are super cool to refurbish your kitchen.

Our new house actually consists of 2 houses. We have two bathrooms, two kitchens, three toilets, two living rooms, 5 bedrooms, 2 halls, a utility room and another large shed. Bizarre isn't it? I still think so! You'll have to clean it all up, haha! The only major drawback of our house 😉 . Well, like I said, we're still working on it. The weekends are all about odd jobs, renovations, maintenance and now pimping the kitchen.
Because what do you do if the kitchen itself is actually still good? Or if you don't have the money for a new kitchen? Or if you live in a rented house and don't have many options for refurbishing the kitchen? Then you can always pimp your kitchen! I am happy to give you the necessary inspiration to make your kitchen more beautiful, practical and cosy. And of course I show you what we are doing and what we have done in the kitchen.
We are not going to replace our kitchen ourselves. Secretly I'd like to, but that's not a priority right now, so we'd rather spend that money on another project in the house. But because we do spend a lot of time in the kitchen, I think it is important that it is tidy and looks cozy. So we are redecorating the kitchen.
What we are going to do anyway is that we will tear down a number of walls in a few months. That is a piece of wall and bar from the kitchen to the dining area so that we create a large kitchen diner. In addition, the wall with the ensuite doors between the kitchen and the living room will also be removed. Again to make the whole thing more spacious. Before the walls are removed, we are going to remove the scrap ceiling in the living room. It's time to modernize. The scrap ceiling in the kitchen and dining room has already been removed, so we are now looking at the rough first floor 😉 .
We will move this renovation to the new year so that we don't have too much clutter in the house by Christmas. The whole thing will be filled with stamps to ensure that nothing subsides during the renovations. When the stamps are in place, we can demolish the walls and then the contractor will put in steel beams, after which we can rebuild.
However, I have already started pimping the kitchen. Because I don't have patience I guess. I want to create more peace at home and I have a lot of ideas for tackling this. But since it also requires a number of renovations, it will be divided into parts. What I can already do is redecorate the kitchen myself and make the dining room cozier and quieter. To start with new lamps.
The lamp we had hung it had only been there for a year and I had it made by a steel farmer. Just a nice steel frame for the ceiling (with invisible mounting) over which you hang loose lamps. Very nice, but I thought it was too busy for the dining room. I replaced this lamp with two beautiful concrete lamps from Lampen24.nl.
Hanging the lamps was still a thing. The scrap ceiling was not possible, of course. But removing the scrap ceiling was not yet on the agenda because I still want some coziness in the house during Christmas. We have already removed the ceiling in the kitchen itself and the sandwich floor underneath is rather messy, so we wanted to wait a little longer in the dining area.
But when checking the light connection, the ceiling turned out to be fairly white. So we did remove the ceiling last week. The slats that you still see here are frameworks against which we will be making the plasterboards in a few months. It is not yet nicely finished, but still a lot lighter than the dark scraps. Also part of pimping the kitchen, haha.
I doubted for a while whether I would go for the single concrete lamp (2 pieces) or multiple lamps on a beam. I also really like those, but they seemed a bit too busy to me – just like the industrial lamp I already had. Which one do you think is the most beautiful?

In the meantime I have done even more to pimp the kitchen. I made my own spice rack. I will make a separate blog about this again, but the above has in any case become the result. What do you think about it? At first the herbs were all on a shelf in the kitchen, super messy of course. Now it is nicely organized and beautiful too!

Our kitchen is now white. We're thinking about painting this one black, but I'm still undecided because I'm afraid it might be too dark. Of course you can also have your kitchen wrapped with interior foil, but that is not really a low budget. It can be very nice by the way, so if you do have around € 1000.00 to spend then wrapping is a great solution.
We had our kitchen sprayed in our previous house. We then went from a dark oak kitchen to a soft cream tone. Also beautiful, but still not as low budget as getting started with a brush yourself. I do that everywhere in the house, so why not with the kitchen, haha. When painting your kitchen, in any case, keep in mind that you use a good paint that is also shock and scratch-resistant is for a nice result, also in use.
Flexa, for example, has the Mooi Easy lacquer for kitchen cabinets.
The countertop in our current kitchen is made of large tiles. Handy, because it is heat-resistant and does not stain. But I think beautiful is different. I would therefore like beton ciré on the counter top, as I do with the window sills done and will do with the dining table. In this way we create more unity.
You also create more unity when pimping your kitchen by working with a few different shades that will make you come back. For example, I want to bring the leather attachment of the spice rack back into the kitchen by making the handles of the kitchen cabinets of the same color leather. You can find such handles at IKEA, for example, but also online. As you can see above, you can pimp your kitchen with a simple adjustment.
In addition, our Brabantia trash can is also covered with (fake) leather in the same shade! You can see it in the photo above with the concrete lamp just hidden behind the plant. All match nicely.
You can also tackle the back wall of the kitchen in all kinds of ways. Do you already have tiles but do you want to get rid of them? Then you could also use concrete ciré there. Then it becomes a nice seamless whole.
Nevertheless, tiles are completely in at the moment, and especially the herringbone to pimp the back wall of your kitchen, as you can see above. Preferably in a striking color.
Another trend to pimp your kitchen is working with a stone wall as a back wall. You can use real stones, but stone slips are a lot easier and easier to clean with an existing wall.
Do you have some money to spend, but not enough for a whole new kitchen? Or is your kitchen still very good (like ours), but are there elements that you can pimp? Then you replace it right?! For example, our extractor hood needs to be replaced. Admittedly, it still works fine, but we really want to get rid of this old-fashioned extractor hood and hang a nice new design variant. Preferably a built-in extractor hood that we can conceal in the ceiling, as in the photo on the right above, I think that would be great.
Of course you don't have to go for 'the great good' if you want to pimp your kitchen. You can also keep it very small, with simple small accessories. Think, for example, of new tea towels and towels for the kitchen. And then with a nice color. Again, try to maintain that unity by combining colors of accessories.
Green gives cosiness to your kitchen. Make some space on your kitchen shelves or extractor hood for plants like you see above and you're done pimping.
Or replace that ugly kitchen roll holder by a great copy as you see above and put a number of nice cutting boards for each other. Handy for quick access, but also fun to style with
Do you like to vary in the kitchen and do you want to pimp the kitchen in different ways? Then you can use a PEG board very well off. You can rearrange it every week if you want! In the photo on the right you can see very well what combining a few colors does. You make it cosy, but the unity still provides peace of mind.
In our case, painting is in any case a must when pimping our kitchen. All windows and doors are dark brown with us. Talk about old-fashioned. However, a color can quickly do something. For example, I started painting the windows in the kitchen and now I have also started painting the doors of the dining room. It also belongs in the kitchen, doesn't it? Look at the difference now that the door is painted black!
Ultimately I really want steel look doors in a number of places, but we will only tackle that after the renovation.
