Tired of mosquitoes biting you at night?
It is indeed annoying! It stings, itches and wakes you up!
Fortunately, there is an effective homemade mosquito trap that anyone can make.
This trap will attract mosquitoes thanks to the fermentation gases of sugar and yeast.
Then, once inside the bottle, the mosquitoes will fall into the syrup and die in this fearsome mosquito trap:
- 200ml of water
- 50g brown sugar
- 1 g brewer's yeast or dehydrated baker's yeast
- An empty 2 liter Coca-Cola bottle
1. Use a knife and scissors to cut the bottle in half.
Cut just a little above the middle to have enough room for the liquid.
2. Boil 200 ml of water in a saucepan.
3. Add 50 g of brown sugar to the pan.
4. When the sugar is completely dissolved in the water, remove the pan from the heat.
5. Leave the resulting mixture (syrup) to cool below 30°C.
You can put the syrup in the fridge to cool it faster.
6. Now pour the syrup into the bottom part of the bottle.
7. Add 1 g of brewer's yeast on top. Do not mix.
8. Take the top of the bottle (neck down) to fit it into the bottom part.
9. Use tape to tape the two halves of the bottle.
There you go, your homemade mosquito trap is ready to use :-)
Now you know how to attract mosquitoes to trap them.
Just place in the room where there are mosquitoes to get rid of them easily.
To maintain effectiveness, change the syrup approximately every 2 weeks, or when there are no more bubbles on the surface.
The disappearance of the bubbles indicates that there is no more fermentation. As a result, carbon dioxide is no longer released and no longer attracts mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we release when we breathe.
And this natural mosquito trap also generates carbon dioxide, thanks to the fermentation of syrup and brewer's yeast.
This trap therefore uses the gases of fermentation to attract mosquitoes into the bottle.
Mosquitoes enter the trap through the neck of the bottle, but once inside, they can't find the hole to get out. As a result, they die and fall into the liquid.
For even more efficiency, you can scatter several bottles around the house or in the bedroom.
- Use brown sugar and nothing else. Do not use any other type of sugar, because that won't work. White sugar is too refined and therefore will ferment too quickly.
- Dissolve the brown sugar in boiling water. Wait until all the sugar is well dissolved. The goal is to create a syrup.
- Don't forget to add brewer's yeast. This is essential for it to work.
- Wait until the syrup has cooled well before adding the brewer's yeast. If the syrup is too hot, it will ferment too quickly and it won't work.
- Do not mix the brewer's yeast in the syrup. Just let it float on the surface, otherwise it may ferment too quickly.
- No need to wrap the mosquito trap in black paper. It does not improve the effectiveness of the trap.
- Prefer a bottle of Coca-Cola to make this trap, because its shape is ideal.
