Not long ago I learned how to do my own washing powder, with this homemade recipe.
Since then, I try to go natural for all my household products!
So, I absolutely had to find a homemade recipe to make my own dishwasher tablets.
My goal was simple:to find an easy-to-make dishwasher tablet recipe, with only natural ingredients.
And of course, I wanted these lozenges to be as effective than those found in the supermarket while being cheaper!

Eh yes. Before, like many people, I went to the supermarket to buy my dishwasher pods, like these.
But now I've found a recipe that's super effective AND saves me a ton of money every year.
After intensive research on the Internet to find effective and natural recipes, I started to test them at home.
The first one I tested seemed to be the right one. The first wash went really well and my dishes were spot on.
But in the second wash, my glasses were fogged up, and I was not really satisfied with the result.
I tested many different recipes, but always with average results. So I decided to start testing my own blends.
And there, banco! I found the magic formula :-) This recipe is cheap AND it is super efficient !
Now, my dishes are perfectly clean and neat, and this WITHOUT using toxic products. Hip hip hooray! Watch:
It's not complicated. To make your own dishwasher tablets, you only need 3 ingredients, which you probably already have at home:
- 1 glass of soda crystals =cleaning power
- 1 glass of baking soda =degreasing power
- 1 glass of coarse salt =reduces lime deposits
- 1 glass of water
Note: if your water is rather soft, reduce the amount of salt.
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients with a spoon.
2. Now add a glass of water. It will make foam! But rest assured, there is no danger.
3. Wait two minutes for the mixture to finish foaming.
4. Mix again until you get a thick texture, similar to wet sand.
5. Put the resulting mixture in ice cube trays.
6. To obtain very compact tablets, pack the mixture with your thumbs and the back of a wooden spoon.
7. Wait 24 hours for your little homemade tablets to solidify.
And There you go ! Your dishwasher tablets are already ready :-)
Easy, fast and economical, right?
It is best to put them in a very dry place if possible exposed to the sun.
Once they have dried well, unmold the tablets from the trays, as you would with ice cubes.
FYI, the pastilles can be stored perfectly in an airtight jar.
Put a tablet in the powder compartment of your dishwasher before each wash.
And that's all ! Easy as pie!
By the way, do you still buy rinse aid? So stop wasting your money now!
The simple and effective trick to save on this unnecessary expense is to use white vinegar. Check out the trick here.
By the way, did you know that dishwasher tablets have plenty of other amazing uses?
If you don't want to use the "tablet system", know that you can even more simply use the mixture you obtained in step 1 as a simple powder for the dishwasher.
To use it, simply add 1 tablespoon of powder to the detergent drawer of your dishwasher. Then, launch your machine as usual.
Only one downside, this mixture tends to harden and leave small marks in the detergent tray of the dishwasher, as is the case with commercial powder.
Not a big problem in itself, because these traces are easily cleaned with a sock filled with rice.
Conversely, homemade tablets will leave no trace in the detergent tray of your dishwasher.
My lozenges are homemade, with only natural ingredients. And they are as effective as commercial ones.
But are they cheaper? Let's take out the calculator to see all this more closely:
- Soda crystals =€6.98 per kilo =€1.26 per glass (180 g)
- Baking soda =€4.18 per kilo =€0.75 per glass (180g)
- Coarse salt =€0.66 per kilo =€0.19 per glass (290 g)
- Total price to make 38 tablets or 38 wash cycles =€2.20
That is an individual price of €0.06 per dishwasher tablet !
Compare that to my old dishwasher tablets, which cost €6.77 for a box of 45 tablets, or €0.15 per tablet.
Half the price! Pretty good in terms of savings, right?
Of course, the time and effort of home-made must be taken into account.
Know that in just 10 min , I easily prepared and molded my tablets in the ice cube trays.
I don't know about you, but for me, this assessment is downright positive :-)
In a short time, with little effort and for really cheap, you too can make great homemade dishwasher tablets... and WITHOUT toxic products !
