But it's something I don't want to use anymore. Especially when I milk my cow.

I have already tested quite a few homemade recipes against flies. It worked pretty well, but not as much as I hoped.
Luckily, I found the recipe for this essential oil-based fly spray that works really well .
Here's the recipe for the best homemade equine fly killer I've tried. Watch:
- 1 liter of cider vinegar (or white vinegar).
- 20 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 20 drops of basil essential oil
- 20 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid
- 1 spray bottle
1. Pour all the ingredients into the spray bottle.
2. Mix well.
3. Spray.
There you go, thanks to this homemade spray, the flies will clear off in no time :-)

For maximum effectiveness, I spray it 1 to 2 times a day . According to my tests, this homemade spray does not kill flies, it just scares them away.
If you don't have apple cider vinegar on hand, this recipe works just as well with white vinegar which is much cheaper.
